2 Suspects Arrested After Explosives Discovered in an Apartment in France

On Wednesday, a peroxide-based explosive that was deployed by Islamic State extremists was discovered in an apartment outside Paris. Two French officials have indicated that the authorities suspect might have been in use as a lab for possible attacks. A police official informed The Associated Press that about 100 grams of usable triacetone triperoxide (known as TATP) were discovered in the Villejuif apartment where a police operation was carried out earlier in the day. 2 suspects were arrested in this regard. A judicial official also confirmed that TATP is an explosive and it was being used by Islamic State militants in the past couple of years, and it was found in the unit, but the official didn’t mention about its quantity.

The Interior Minister, Gerard Collomb issued a statement on Wednesday that the two officials with knowledge of the probe spoke on condition of secrecy due to the ongoing investigation. A tip from a repairman informed police about the apartment. He was doing a job in the Villejuif building and informed security authorities after experiencing untrustworthy products in an apartment. Collomb further added that Police discovered substances that might be used in making explosives in the unit. The office of the Paris prosecutor said that its counter-terrorism section has opened an investigation under possible charges of Criminal Terrorist Association and Possession, Transportation & Production of explosive substances in relation with a terrorist action by an organized gang. Police officials said that a bomb-disposal operation was carried out in the apartment.
