CIA Director Pompeo met with North Korean leader: Trump
On Wednesday, the U.S President Donald Trump said that the CIA Director Mike Pompeo made a secret visit to North Korea earlier this month. He met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and the meeting went very smoothly. Trump added that a good relationship was formed and a direct contact with North Korea. It was a rare step for the United States made to work out details of a possible Trump-Kim summit. The President added in a tweet and mentioned the potential summit’s ultimate objective. He tweeted about the trip of Pompeo that denuclearization will be a great achievement for the World and for North Korea. Trump also confirmed the substance of recent reports by multiple outlets, which had quoted unnamed White House officials speaking about it. But, Trump also introduced an element of potential confusion as he said that Pompeo met with Kim last week.
Early reports had mentioned the secret meeting took place during Easter weekend or around April 1, at least 2-weeks ago. The confirmation about some details regarding trip of Pompeo as it comes after Trump said on Tuesday that the United States and North Korea have had direct discussions at very high levels. He delivered his statement during a joint news conference with the Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. Trump also predicted that he is expecting to sit down with the North Korean leader at the beginning of June. The White House was considering 5 possible sites for a supposed meeting. The Washington Post initially reported the visit of Pompeo and pointed out that Pompeo has taken the lead on the administration’s negotiations with Pyongyang. His meeting with North Korean leader marks the top-level contact between both countries since 2000.
