A U.S district judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly has ruled against an updated policy of Donald Trump restricting transgender troops from serving in the U.S military. Kollar-Kotelly is a U.S district judge for the District of Columbia has rejected to allow the new policy of Donald Trump hindering transgender troops to go into effect. The judge also rejected a request forwarded by the Trump administration to lift previously issued instructions. Point to be noted that Trump had previously announced a supposed ban on the transgender community from serving in the U.S military in any capacity in the month of July 2017. The U.S President Trump published a number of tweets last year announcing his ban. Trump said in one of his tweets that “Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail”.
The ban of Trump administration was designed to underneath policy measures of Barack Obama-era which allowed transgender individuals to serve in the U.S military. Kollar-Kotelly was among one of the federal judges who temporarily blocked ban of Trump and indicated that it was likely unconstitutional. The U.S President Trump approved an updated policy earlier this year in March which projected to revoke his initial absolute ban. Trump’s memorandum which adopted recommendations from the U.S Defense Secretary Jim Mattis banned “transgender persons with history or diagnosis of gender dysphoria”. The memorandum indicated that Transgender persons with a history or diagnosis of gender dysphoria individuals who the policies state may require substantial medical treatment, including medications and surgery are disqualified from military service except under specific limited circumstances.
