First Transplant of Penis Took Place in the United States
The first transplant of penis took place in the United States. A 64 years old patient had lost his penis due to cancer and received this first transplant of penis. The Massachusetts General Hospital also confirmed that 64 years old man Thomas Manning resident of Halifax, Massachusetts has received the penis transplantation from a departed donor and this operation took more than 15 hours. A plastic & reconstructive surgeon Dr. Curtis Cetrulo headed and helped the team of surgeon that successfully transplanted the organ. Dr. Curtis said that the patient would be ready to urinate as a normal man within a couple of weeks and his organ will be able to perform sexual functions within a couple of months.
Cetrulo further added that patient had lost most part of his penis and it was efficiently removed in order to stop the potentially aggressive penile cancer. He added that the patient was not involved in sexual relation with anyone during the discovery of cancer and the new relationships were impossible after removal of his penis. The patient said that he didn’t experience any kind of pain during or after the operation. Only one serious complexity happened just one day after the transplantation surgery when seepage started and he was shifted to operation room. Cetrulo said that this process took at least 3 years including deceased body and operations prior to begin the transplant of the organ. He added that a dozen surgeons and more than 30 care workers participated in this operation.
