According to a research published in the journal Circulation; a byproduct used for digestion which was made up from high fat animal products has been found out to be the cause of chronic kidney disease called CKD.
The high levels of Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) found in the blood of patients has helped the researchers at the Cleveland Clinic that the patient with high levels would develop CKD soon. In another separate study it was established that a TMAO-rich diet affected the kidneys of mice as a complete trend which went over a series of changes during the experiments along with the development of CKD and heart disease.
“What this suggests to us is that this pathway that makes TMAO is both a mediator of cardiovascular disease and now appears to be a mediator in the development of CKD,” lead study author Stanley Hazen, chair of the department of molecular medicine at the Lerner Research Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, told FoxNews.com. “But it’s also linked to the heightened cardiovascular disease risk if they have kidney disease. It’s a spiraling kind of thing: The worse the kidney function gets, the higher the TMAO gets.”
It has been reported that the digestive system metabolizes the foods like red meat, veal and egg yolk which causes TMAO. Atherosclerosis was a research based on the links given in by the TMAO research as it was also caused due to the foods that are cholesterol rich and they amass in the arteries and cause damage. These massed form pockets of plaque which when breaks up causes a heart attach or a stroke of paralyses.
According to a research done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that more than 20 million Americans have CKD out of which most are not even diagnosed of it. CKD happens due to a slow process of loss over the kidney function.
Kidneys help the body in passing out the unwanted material of the body — the past research have produced that the people who suffer from CKD have higher chances of suffering from heart diseases. It has been said that the usual risk factor is due to the risk at heart with relation to the CKD, Hazen said.
“We thought this may explain the excess risk,” Hazen said
It was found out that the TMAO levels of the blood have been found out for 4,000 adults over a research period of five years of the mortality rates. During the research and the primary three years of it, they checked if the patients suffered a heart attack or a stroke of paralyses. The research doctors also took in consideration of the health and function of the kidneys at the start and end of the reading.
At the beginning of the study, it was found out that out of the total patients 3166 did not suffer from CKD while 520 were sufferers of CKD. All those people who had a previous suffering of congenital heart disease or any kind of acute coronary syndromes or any one who had been through revascularization issues within one month of enrollment in the study of it. The basic analysis of the adjustment was on the fact of risking the basics of age, sex, blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, smoking and diabetes.
It was diagnosed that patients who had higher TMAO levels were the ones suffering from CKD. If a patient had ever been in those levels was a different factor and if the mortality risk was a cause of it in five years time; paralysis or a heart attack is some where related with the TMAO level according to the details taken by Hazen.
To make sure if the study was going in the right direction it was checked on three different groups of mice: the first one was on the bases of a controlled diet while the other two diets were based on the food components that were rich in CKD increasing food. The food rich in TMAO was given to one group while the last one was given metabolite choline.
“We were very surprised but also gratified to see that both of those diets led to progressive renal dysfunction,” Hazen said.
Confirming the TMAO levels in the blood of the mice, it was shown that the research based on the degree of renal dysfunction and renal fibrosis had a relation between the to form the high level of TMAO.
According to the study it was seen that all the mice had their kidneys affected ___ along with those mice that had a resistance to the loss of the renal function.
According to Hazen the connection between the diets having shown from TMAO and CKD in animals were beautifully shown while all the researchers did not know if all the animals had a good function like the humans. Detailed study showed that the increase and decrease of TMAO buildup in the diet is helpful in avoiding CKD in humans.
According to Hazen, it was seen that the group of experts found out that the diseases may be differently affective on different people according to their body acceptance levels.
“These studies help us to understand why there are inter individual differences for risks for developing kidney disease and heart disease,” he said.
