Mueller Report and response from 2020 Democratic candidates
The Democratic presidential candidates have issued calls for transparency over the findings of the Mueller report. They believe Donald Trump is guilty of wrongdoing. On Friday, the special counsel Robert Mueller’s report was delivered to the Justice Department and it is now in the hands of U.S attorney general William Barr. The submission of the report sparked a frenzy of speculation regarding what it might contain, even though virtually nothing was released to the public except the special counsel’s recommendation of no new further indictments.
The lack of details didn’t stop the 2020 presidential candidates from making bold claims. Former Texas congressman Beto O’Rourke delivered his words during a campaign stop in South Carolina. O’Rourke said, “It is beyond a shadow of a doubt that once in office, the president of the United States sought to obstruct justice. First is firing the principal investigator into what had happened in the 2016 election and then tweeting at his attorney general to stop the Russia investigation”. O’Rourke joined his fellow candidates, senators Amy Klobuchar, Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, and Bernie Sanders.
All candidates demanded that the results of the investigation be made public. A former prosecutor from California, Kamala Harris vowed that she would work to ensure that Trump doesn’t get a free pass should she become president. She said during a campaign stop in Texas, “I know and will know and do know how to prosecute the case against Donald Trump”. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders also made a threat to the U.S President. He delivered his words during a campaign stop in California and said, “Trump would be brought to justice if it were determined that he broke the law. Nobody, including the president of the United States, is above the law”. Now, Barr will determine how much of the Mueller report to be handed over to Congress. Democrats have already indicated they will fight for full transparency in the process.
