The U.S President Donald Trump said providing support to Montenegro including members of the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) could mean starting “World War III”. Fox News host Tucker Carlson asked the U.S President that why his son should go to Montenegro to defend it from attack, as a way of criticizing the central philosophy of the organization? An attack on one member is an attack on all of them. The U.S President said that he understands what you’re saying; he has asked the same question. He added that Montenegro is a tiny country with very strong people. They are very aggressive people and they may get antagonistic, and congratulations, you’re in World War III. He added that don’t forget, he just got here a little more than a year and a half ago.
The U.S President has routinely criticized the military alliance started in the years after the Second World War in order to protect European nations from the threat of a Soviet aggression. Montenegro is a small Balkan country on the Adriatic Sea and they joined the alliance last summer. Trump didn’t endorse Article 5 of the charter of the alliance (the item that outlines mutual defense) during his first meeting at Brussels headquarters. The article was just invoked for the first time when the United States attacked on September 11, 2001. Montenegro has sent troops to the ongoing war in Afghanistan since joining NATO as the Afghan war started just after the attacks. Now, Trump hit out at the NATO members for not joining a fair share of money towards the defense budget.
