Own Social Network Developed by the Extremists of ISIS
Social media has become a key tool for the militants of Islamic State to spread their propaganda and motivate members. But, some companies such as Twitter and Telegram are continuously cracking down on the accounts related to ISIS. There are a number of militants building their own private social networks for their efforts and communications. The director of Europol (European Police Office) Rob Wainwright delivered his words at a security conference in London that they have discovered a new network during a 2-day operation against Islamic terrorism. Reuters indicated that Europol initiated the operation in collaboration with the United States, Greece, Belgium, Portugal and Poland. The operation unwrapped more than 2 thousand “extremist” items from a total of 52 different online networks.
Wainwright further added that the operation results mentioned that the Islamic State terrorist group is developing its own social media platform and they will use this platform to run their agenda. He didn’t mention that this new platform was developed in a response to increasing attention from well established companies such as Google, Twitter and Facebook in removing the possible extremist material. He added that “we have made it too harder for them to operate in these social media networks, but we are still experiencing publications of some extreme videos and their communication on a large scale over the internet. The White House also indicated that the ISIS traffic on Twitter dropped significantly at over 45% within past 2 years.
