President Trump is looking to stop Tax Record Turnover from US Supreme Court
US President Donald Trump asked the Supreme Court on Tuesday to put on hold an appeals court ruling. A federal court earlier ruled Trump’s accountant must immediately turn over tax records to a New York state prosecutor. The new move is setting up a decision from the high court that could come before Election Day. Point to be noted that the court could allow the immediate enforcement of a subpoena issued by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. or block it temporarily, even if the court rules against Trump. However, the records would normally not be made public but turned over to the office of Manhattan District Attorney. It was considered the 2nd time the records issue has reached the high court.
It is noteworthy that the court earlier prevented the records from being turned over while the case proceeded. The justices rejected President Trump’s argument in July that he is effectively immune from investigation while he holds office. Trump’s 2 Supreme Court nominees, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh also joined that decision. But, the high court returned the Vance case and another similar case involving records sought by the US Congress to lower courts to allow Trump’s attorneys to make additional arguments. A district court judge rejected Trump’s attorneys’ renewed efforts in August, to block Vance’s access to the records.
The 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan agreed last week and said the records should be turned over. But, the rulings have been on hold while the appeal from the attorneys of President Trump. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. is seeking more than 8 years of the Republican President’s personal and corporate tax records as part of an investigation conducted from his office. It involves an investigation as part of than probe linked to payoffs to 2 women. President Trump was accused of a payoff to porn actress Stormy Daniels and model Karen McDougal to keep them silent about their alleged extramarital affairs with Trump during the 2016 campaign.
