Ramsey Orta was arrested due to filming encounter between Eric Garner and New York City Police
Ramsey Orta was unintentionally pushed into the national attention after capturing motivating pictures of the death of Eric Garner in the month of July 2014. Eric Garner was died after an alleged encounter by the New York City Police in Staten Island. On 3rd October 2016, a news was published that Ramsey Orta was sentenced to prison for four years due to alleged filming of the police crime. It is important that Eric Garner was killed by New York Police on 17th July 2014 and Ramsey Orta captured some motivating pictures of this police encounter. Orta was arrested after one week of this incident and charged unrelated gun, but due to capturing the death of Garner of camera.
It is important that he was again arrested after six months for allegedly sale of drugs and he was blocked from posting bail using funds collected from crowd-sourcing. Point to be noted that Orta was arrested three times between July 2014 and July 2016 and was moved because he prepared an alleged pattern of police harassment. After entering a guilty plea in July 2016 on charges stemming from those arrests, Orta was sentenced to four years in prison on 3 October 2016 on charges relating to possession of a gun and a controlled substance. Although Orta’s supporters maintained the charges were retaliatory in nature, Orta was neither charged nor convicted in relation to the act filming Eric Garner’s death. Orta pled guilty to weapons and drug charges in July 2016 and was sentenced based on those pleas.
