73-years old Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was hospitalized with an infection. The court said he is expected to be discharged from the hospital in a couple of days. The Supreme Court issued a statement that Justice Thomas was shifted on Friday to Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. He was experiencing flu-related symptoms.

The statement also said Thomas underwent tests and was diagnosed with a flu infection. Doctors are treating him with symptoms related to antibiotics. He is rapidly recovering and resting comfortably. The hospital officials are expecting to discharge him within a couple of days.

However, Justice Thomas will remain involved during his absence from Supreme Court proceedings. He will continue the consideration and discussion of cases based on recordings of audio arguments and written materials. Other justices will also hear audio arguments on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

Thomas has served over 30 Years

Justice Thomas is one of the conservative devotees on the high court. He has also served for over 30 years of a longer time period compared to any other current justice. The court didn’t mention why it waited 2 days to release the news.

Justice Clarence Thomas is an American lawyer who already served as an associate justice of the US Supreme Court. Moreover, President George H. W. Bush nominated Thomas to succeed Thurgood Marshall and has served since 1991.

However, Thomas is the 2nd African-American to serve on the Court, after Marshall. He also served as the senior associate justice since 2018 and marked the longest-serving member of the Court. His entire tenure is 30 years, 150 days until March 22, 2022.

George H. W. Bush appointed Justice Thomas

Justice Thomas grew up in Savannah, Georgia. He was educated at the College of the Holy Cross and Yale Law School. In 1974, Thomas was appointed as an assistant attorney general in Missouri and later started a private practice.

Thomas became a legislative assistant to the United States Senator John Danforth in 1979. He was also appointed Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights at the US Department of Education in 1981. US President Ronald Reagan appointed Thomas in 1982 as Chairman of the EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission).

Moreover, President George H. W. Bush nominated Thomas in 1990, to the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. He served in that position for 16 months before filling Marshall’s seat on the Supreme Court. The confirmation hearings for Thomas were bitter and intensely fought. It centered on an allegation that he had sexually harassed attorney Anita Hill.

Thomas was alleged to harass Anita Hill

Anita Hill was a subordinate at the Department of Education and the EEOC. She claimed that Thomas made multiple sexual and romantic attempts at her in spite of her repeatedly requesting him to stop. However, Thomas and his supporters asserted that Hill had fabricated the allegations to prevent the appointment of a black conservative to the Court.

Justice Thomas is also an advocate of natural law. He entered Yale Law School and received a J.D (Juris Doctor) degree in 1974 and graduated in the middle of his class. Most of the political experts believe Thomas is the most conservative member of the court. He has been famous for asking questions during oral arguments for over a decade.
