Trump appointed Tyler McGaughey as White House Legal Adviser
The U.S President Donald Trump has appointed the son-in-law of his next attorney general to the White House legal office. It has sparked fresh conflict-of-interest concerns in an administration that have increasingly become a family affair. Tyler McGaughey was married to attorney general William Barr’s youngest daughter. He has now left his post in the Justice Department for the new role.
On Friday afternoon, the U.S Senate voted to confirm Barr as the next U.S chief law enforcement officer. The attorney general refused to commit from overseeing special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. He previously described the probe as fatally misconceived in an unsolicited memo sent to the Justice Department.
Son-in-law of Barr will now join a division of the White House legal team. He will reportedly work intersects with the Russia investigation. But, he hasn’t been assigned to the team responsible for defending the U.S President in the special counsel’s probe. The oldest daughter of Barr, Mary Daly also worked at the U.S Justice Department within the deputy attorney general’s office. she worked as the director of Opioid Enforcement and Prevention Efforts. She has also found a new role at the Treasury Department’s financial crimes unit.
Mary Daly will now work at the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, but her specific role wasn’t immediately confirmed. CNN reported, Daly’s husband also works at the Justice Department. He was expected to remain in his post within the department’s national security division. The former director of the Office of Government Ethics, Walter Shaub described the attorney general’s son-in-law joining the White House legal team as concerning. He said it was a good idea for Barr’s family to leave their posts in the Justice Department in order to prevent the bad optics. Shaub informed the network regarding the new role of McGaughey in the White House.
