Trump says Try Anti-Malaria Drugs to treat the Covid-19 Coronavirus
U.S President Donald Trump has pressurized the American people into taking an anti-malaria medication to treat Covid-19 symptoms, in spite of the lack of evidence showing an impact of the drug could have an impact. The praise from Trump for the medication came again during his daily press briefing on Saturday. He said, “What do you have to lose? It’s been out there for a long time. What do you have to lose? I hope they use it. I may take it. I have to ask my doctors”. Last month, the clinical trials were launched for hydroxychloroquine. It is a variant of chloroquine, but there has been no definitive study to show the drug can prevent or terminate Covid-19 symptoms.
Point to be noted that it was formerly approved to use for malaria patients and to aid lupus sufferers. Last week, the Mayo Clinic released a warning for healthcare providers regarding the dangers the drug could pose on some patients. It includes it potentially causing sudden cardiac death when taken. The European Commission also announced there was no proof hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine (used for malaria) could treat the coronavirus. A spokesman for the European Commission said, “The efficacy of hydroxychloroquine in the treatment of Covid-19 patients has to date not been proved”. But, the FDA has authorized emergency use for the drug on Covid-19 patients, on Sunday.
Trump said during his briefing, “The question I most hate the answer to is what happens if you do have a ventilator? What are your chances? I just hope that hydroxychloroquine wins”. It is noteworthy that patients going on ventilators have been the concern with the virus because of how it attacks the upper respiratory system. The survival chance of a patient goes rare when he moves on a ventilator. So, the scientists are working to find drug therapies, such as hydroxychloroquine to relieve symptoms generated by Covid-19. President also said, “Hydroxychloroquine. Try it. If you’d like, take it”.
