Trump will interfere in case of Huawei Executive Meng Wanzhou
The U.S President Donald Trump has decided to interfere in the case of a Huawei executive facing fraud charges in the United States if it would help to secure a trade deal with China. Trump said that he would step in if he thinks it’s good for the country following the arrest of Meng Wanzhou which sparked fury in Beijing. Meng is the chief financial officer of the Chinese telecoms giant. She was bailed by a Canadian court on Tuesday but could still be deported to the United States on fraud charges.
The 46-year-old is the daughter of Huawei’s founder and she was detained in Vancouver earlier this month at the request of U.S investigators probing alleged violations of American sanctions on Iran. Last week, China summoned the U.S ambassador to Beijing to demand American authorities revoke an arrest warrant for Meng. Beijing also warned Canada that there would be severe consequences if she wasn’t quickly released.
It is noteworthy that Trump needs China to open up its markets to more American-made products. He hasn’t yet spoken to Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding the case. But Trump said, “If I think it’s good for the country if I think it’s good for what will be certainly the largest trade deal ever made, which is a very important thing, what’s good for national security, I would certainly interfere if I thought it was essential”. A former U.S ambassador and senior officer in the National Security Council, Michael McFaul said, “I so hope this is not true. We can’t be arresting people to do trade deals”. A judge in British Columbia granted Meng a bail of $10m after 3 days of hearings.
