Trump’s London Visit to attend NATO Summit
The U.S President Donald Trump has planned to visit London for a NATO summit in December 2019. The trip of Donald Trump comes after his stay in the UK during the month of July. He formerly experienced a large number of protests. NATO secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg said that Trump has mused regarding pulling the U.S out of the alliance. He was due to attend along with other leaders to address the security challenges we face now and in the future.
Stoltenberg Tweeted, “It is the ideal setting to mark 70 years of transatlantic cooperation, as the home of NATO’s first HQ back in 1949. Grateful to the UK for hosting”. Trump’s last UK visit cost taxpayers £18 million and experienced the largest police mobilization effort since the 2011 riots. Thousands of officers were deployed over 3 days to cope with the president’s security demands.
The trip initiated mass demonstrations, including one in central London. The protest was attended by more than 100,000 people, while roughly 50,000 gathered in Edinburgh. A 6-meter tall “baby balloon”, a caricature of Trump depicting him as orange-faced and dressed in a nappy, was flown over Parliament Square during the London protest following a crowd-funding campaign by organizers.
Theresa May said she was very pleased Britain had been asked to host the meeting. She said in a statement, “December’s meeting is an important opportunity to determine the steps we must now take to modernize the Alliance and ensure its continued success”. Trump has repeatedly cast doubt on America’s continued membership of NATO. He blamed European allies especially Germany for lagging behind military spending goals the president has set. The New York Times reported, Trump informed his top national security officials that he didn’t see the point of the western military alliance, which he presented as a drain on the United States.
