Why CNN was criticized for On-Screen Graphic about White Supremacy?
The CNN and Jim Sciutto (fill-in host of Jake Tapper) were criticized on 21st November 2016 just after the cable news network presented a segment regarding a speech delivered by white nationalist leader Richard Spencer. Sciutto described Spencer and his followers as “unabashed white supremacists, anti-Semites and racists” in the alleged segment. The referenced remarks of Sciutto were taken from a speech of Spencer delivered at the annual conference arranged by his organization NPI (National Policy Institute) on 18th November 2016 in Washington D.C. but, it was on-screen chyron of CNN “Alt-right founder questions if Jews are people”. It was condemned by Sciutto, Tapper and most of the viewers. Spencer referred it in his speech as “Soulless Golems”, a reference to Jewish stories regarding beings magically created from Clay or Mud.
The Reason editor Elizabeth Nolan Brown also pointed out that words of Spencer regarding “Soulless Golems” were used in the circumstances of questioning the humanity & intelligence of members of the “the Mainstream Media”, but not targeted specifically to Jews. It was also said that Spencer and his group NPI are not famous white nationalists. Photographs captured from the speech have indicated that supporters were raising their hands specific to the Nazi salute, but Spencer was smiling during referring about “the Mainstream Media”. It means Lying Press as it was often used in the era of German Nazi propaganda to mention Non-Friendly-Party (Communist and Jewish) news sources.
