Why Michael Cohen postponed Testimony to the U.S Congress?
The personal lawyer of U.S President Donald Trump, Michael Cohen has postponed his testimony to the U.S Congress. His adviser has announced that it is due to receiving threats from Trump against his family. Cohen has received ongoing threats against his family from Trump and the president’s current attorney, Rudy Giuliani. Attorney Lanny Davis said in a statement that Cohen was found guilty to crimes he committed during working on the 2016 election campaign. He was initially scheduled to provide his testimony before the House Oversight Committee on 7 February at the invitation of Democratic Rep. and chairman of the committee, Elijah Cummings.
Davis said, “Due to ongoing threats against his family from President Trump and Giuliani, as recently as this weekend. Cohen’s continued cooperation with ongoing investigations, by the advice of counsel, Cohen’s appearance will be postponed to a later date”. He added, “Cohen wishes to thank Chairman Cummings for allowing him to appear before the House Oversight Committee and looks forward to testifying at the appropriate time. This is a time where Cohen had to put his family and their safety first”.
Last month, Trump branded his former fixer a “rat” in a tweet and suggested that he had damaging information on Cohen’s father-in-law. Trump said in an interview with Fox News, “That’s the one that people want to look at”. The president was asked by a reporter during an event at the White House about Cohen saying he had been threatened by Trump and Giuliani. Trump said, “I would say he’s been threatened by the truth. He’s only been threatened by the truth. And he doesn’t want to do that probably for me or other of his clients. He has other clients also, I assume, and he doesn’t want to tell the truth for me or other of his clients”.
